About Myanmar

The Country

myanmar
Myanmar, known as Burma or Suvanabhumi, is famous for tens of thousands of pagodas, and is recognized as the “Golden Land”. Myanmar is rich with religious monuments, mysterious history, blue virgin beaches, hidden archaeological sites, and snow-capped mountains. Its is full of cultural resources and has a rich diversity of ethnic groups. The unique things about Myanmar are its unspoiled natural scenery and cultural diversity. It is an ideal place to experience archaeology, flora and fauna.

Myanmar is also rich in different flavours of tourism taste, such as the mysterious Golden Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, the last Myanmar Kingdom’s Palace at Mandalay, Asia’s most treasured archaeological site at Bagan with millions of ancient pagodas, the hidden and unspoiled ancient city of Myauk-U, Inle Lake with its culture of rowing boats with one leg, and the blue water and white sandy beaches of Ngapali & Chaung Tha. These are the most visited sites in Myanmar.

The country’s culture is also free from racial or sexual discrimination, by giving equal rights opportunity both at work or and at home. Burmese women have the right not to have the surname of their husband, and the same status right in the family as their counterpart. Even though Myanmar has numerous attractive tourist places, most of visitors agree that the most attractive thing about Myanmar is gracious smiles of local people, and their hospitality and friendliness. You can enjoy a great history of Myanmar with its diversity of culture and races.

Because of above-mentioned factors, Myanmar has become Asia’s safest and most interesting destination. Most revenue from the tourism sector goes to economically support the everyday people of Myanmar.

Geography

The Union of Myanmar is the largest mainland country in the South-East Asia Peninsula and occupies land area of over 670,000 sq. kms. Myanmar has a strategic role in Asia due to its position between China and India, with a border area of over 2100km with China and 1400 km with India. Neighbouring countries are China located in north, Laos and Thailand in the east, India and Bangladesh in the west, and the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea in the south.

The Land of Myanmar stretches from the Himalaya mountain ranges in the north down to the delta area and the Islands of the Andaman Sea in the south, thus providing a varied topology which includes islands, river valleys, delta rice plains, hills and beautiful mountains. The highest snow-capped mountains are located in far north regions and include the famous Hkakabo Razo mountain at 5800 metres. Major mountain ranges are the Western Yoma, Bago Yoma, Rakhine Yoma, and Shan Plateau. Mountain ranges divide three major freshwater rivers which flow down parallel into the Indian Ocean. These are the Irrawaddy River (country’s longest river at 1200 km), the Salween River (steep and narrow with extreme flow), and the Sittaung River (from Taungoo to Mawlamyine). The Irrawaddy River is mostly used for major inland river transportations and also widely preferable for tourists to enjoy scenes of rich natural river banks. The central region of Myanmar is covered mostly with freshwater rivers and decent plains.

Naypyidaw is the new (Administrative) capital of Myanmar. Yangon is the ex-capital and largest city, and the commercial capital of Myanmar.

The History

1. Earliest Stage

Myanmar has a long history and the earliest primates, aged over 40 million of years, were found in the Pondaung area at the northern side of Myanmar. Archaeologists believe that the Mon people migrated from places now known as Thailand, and that the Pyu migrated from the Tibet area, and cultivated the Ayeyarwaddy valley over 5000 years ago. The Pyu were defeated by the Mon and many cities emerged and and unified as the first Burmese union in the 8th Century. The earliest kingdom had been established under Pyu dynasty which had already attained a high level of civilization at that time, much earlier than famous capital of Bagan Dynasty.

2. Bagan Dynasty (AD 1044 - 1077)

Bagan empire unified the numerous independent groups under King Anawrahta’s strong leadership as the first Burmese Empire. The King also introduced Buddhism to Myanmar by bringing Tipitaka from Sri Linka, also with the help of guidelines from Monk Shin Arahan. The Empire extended east to Cambodia, and west to Assam and Manipur. The Great Bagan Kindom was invaded by Mongols in 1287 and broke up into small states: Bago by Mon, Innwa by Shan and Toungoo by Burmese.

3. Taungoo Dynasty (AD 1551 – 1581)

After the breaking up of the Bagan Dynasty, King Bayintnaung built up the Second Union Myanmar Empire by bravely gathering all the defeat states of his predecessors and setting up the Taungoo Dynasty in central Myanmar at (1551-81). The capital had been moved to Bago and became one of the trade hubs among nearby countries. The empire extended to the Chaing Mei (Thai) and Tenasserim divisions.

4. Konebaung Dynasty ( AD 1752 - 1760)

The Third Myanmar Empire was formed by King Alaungpaya in 1752 after conquering the Mon state. The capital was moved to Ava and it became a business centre for French, English and Dutch companies. King Sinphyushin, son of King Alaungpaya, extended the empire by adding Siam (Thailand) in 1767. Starting from that time, Myanmar arts was influenced by the Siamese. Konebaung Dynasty was the last empire of Myanmar.

5. British Colony & Japanese Fascist ( 1885 - 1948 )

There were three wars with the British, in 1825, 1852 and 1885. After 1825, the British occupied Tenasserim and Arakan, and after 1853 the British ruled lower Myanmar, including Yangon. The King resided in Mandalay and was the last Myanmar Kingdom & Palace. In 1885, Myanmar’s last King Thibaw and family were brought to India, and the whole of Myanmar was taken over by asBritish Colony.

The British occupied Myanmar until 1948, with the Japanese fascists ruling for three consecutive years (1942-45) during the Second World War. All Myanmar races signed the Pinlon Contract that gave independence from the British, to the Myanmar Union without differentiating between minor and major races from British Colonist. The Country celebrated independence on 4th January 1948.

h3-bg

Economy

The major economy of Myanmar is agriculture, with 70 percent of the workforce employed in growing crops. Myanmar was a major rice exporter before Second World War. The country aimed to slowly transform itself into an industrial country from the 1990s. Nowadays, the country receives major foreign income from forestry and wood exports, as well as from the energy and mine sectors.

After political reform in 2011, Myanmar received much attention from international investors, and issued new laws, such as the Central Bank of Myanmar Law, Financial Institutions of Myanmar Law, and the Myanmar Tourism Law. Myanmar utilises a market-oriented economic system, and promotes the role of the private sector and foreign direct investment. Because of its rich natural resources such as jade, ruby, petroleum, timber, coal, neutral gas and lots of minerals deposit, Myanmar is eagerly awaiting the issuance of new Foreign Investment Law.

h3-bg

The Culture

Myanmar has an exotic and distinctive culture, with the numerous minority groups having their own culture and traditions. Myanmar culture developed dramatically within the Bagan Dynasty. Archaeological sites, pagodas, temple and stupas are proving to give the country a higher level of cultural status.

Myanmar culture received influences from Siam (Thai) during the Konebaung Dynasty especially in opera and music. The unique culture of Myanmar includes its religions, literature, handicraft, wood carving, painting, dress and martial arts. Being a Buddhist country has a big influence in Myanmar daily culture; obedience to elders, helpfulness & forgiveness, tolerance and peace to others are great characteristics of Myanmar people.

Myanmar has unique traditional dress, language and dialects. Traditional dress for men is called longyi, and for women called htamain, both of which are very suitable for Myanmar’s hot climate weather.

h3-bg

Religions

Most of Myanmar people (about 80 %) are Buddhist and the country is also the world centre of Theravada Buddhism. The country has thousands of pagoda spread all over the country and the daily routine life of local people is deeply influenced by Buddhism. It is common to see local people meditating to get inner peace and mind-awareness in pagodas, monuments and temples.

Buddhism religion is held in respect within the cultural groups of Bamar, Kachin, Kaya, Kayin, Mon, Arakan and Shan. They respect the religious freedom and accept the tolerance of other religions. Most of cities have at least one or two Churches or Mosques in highly dense populated areas. Christians are almost about 5% of the population and most of them are Kayin, Kachin and Chins. Hindu & Islam comprise almost 6% of the population and mostly dominated by Indian population.

h3-bg

Language

Myanmar has unique languages all its own. Bamar is the mother tongue of Myanmar and is also the official language. Ethnic groups have 135 different languages. English is widely spoken and understood in major cities and tourist sites.

Foods

Myanmar food is mainly served with rice and curry. Other famous traditional breakfast cuisines are mo-hin-ga, noodles with fish gravy, ohn-noe-khaut-swe (laksa) noodles with coconut milk, and kaw-bote, fried sticky rice powder. Other cuisines that are popular are Chinese, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Korean, and European. Most local people are content to have a plate of rice and curry for their lunch. Good restaurants can easily be found in Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Inle, and serve quality food with reasonable price. The night bazaar of Chinatown, located in the downtown area in 19th Street, is famous for its variety of food stalls and bars that open till midnight along the main roads. Crowds of people spend their evening at these outlets drinking draught beer, and local distilled spirits such as whisky, rum, and gin. Wine is also easily available. Eating at street outlets can be a wonderful Asian experience but you should be aware of hygiene and ask the recommendation of a local guide.

A common drink in Myanmar is dry red-tea, taken in small cups throughout the day. Pickled Tea Leaf Salad is called la-phet in local language and is normally served to guests with snacks and red tea. Some take la-phet mixed with tomatoes, chilli and garlic. La-phet is one of the most famous traditional snacks in Myanmar.

h3-bg

Climate

Myanmar has a favourable tourist friendly climate and has the influence of a tropical monsoon climate, Myanmar had three distinct seasons: Summer season (30-35° C) runs from February to April, Rainy season (25-30° C) runs from May to October, and the Winter season (20-25° C) goes from November to January. The best period to visit Myanmar is the dry-cold season from November to February. At that time, the weather is very fair and scenery is very green, with the lakes and rivers full of water in most areas.

h3-bg

Currency

Myanmar local currency is Kyat. Notes are issued in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000 & 10000. As per new Foreign Exchange Regulations, Foreigners are free to exchange at authorized money exchangers in Banks or at the Airport according to daily international exchange rates. It is important to bring enough US$ dollars into Myanmar as there’s are no EFTPOS, traveller’s cheque services or any international online bank transaction services. There are numerous ATM machines now available in Yangon and Mandalay.

Feedback from our Customer

ACL-1230 Ms.Janice M N Bressler (U.S.A)(visited on 15 Feb 2019)
Thank you for your attentiveness to my needs on the tour. I enjoyed my travel in Myanmar very much. This is the first time I have taken a private tour and I was very pleased. The guides were so attentive to my needs and assisted me every step of the way. I almost fest like I wasn't blind they were so good at their guidance.
I was especially pleased that the guides were flexible and when I preferred to do something different from the itinerary, they were very cooperative. Obviously for me watching the sunset was not a high priority for me and I enjoyed other activities instead. All the guides were also very good at finding food for me that was delicious and vegetarian and the right price for me. They tailored everything to my needs and wishes.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting me in my tour of Myanmar. I hope to return to Myanmar in the future. Perhaps I will be able to teach English there someday, and if I do I will certainly want to travel more throughout the country. thank you for your excellent service!

We have considered your company has organized an excellent holiday for our family. Using tour guides who are from the local area has meant the guides have been able to recommend restaurant and provides information at our request. The guides have all been excellent and the transport has been excellent. All of this has been helpful in providing a very interesting holiday to a fantastic county.

ACL-63, Mr. John Jame Hickey (British)
We have recently returned from a 9 night / 10 day holiday in Myanmar. Our group consisted of my wife, our two sons aged 25 and 23 and myself. We used a local travel company called Asia Central Link Co. LTD ( ACL )They helped us plan the trip and provided a very detailed itinerary from Yangoon- Bagan- Mandalay- Pindaya- Inle- Yangoon. The trip include transport in an air-conditioned people carrier with a driver, local, English speaking guides for each destination, 3* accommodation, including breakfast, 3 internal flights, a 3 day / 2 night river cruise aboard the Irrawaddy Princess II and a complimentary farewell meal. Each place we visited had a full itinerary for local places of interest and were explained in the greatest of detail by our helpful guides. When it came to the end of the holiday, ACL asked us to complete an evaluation form about every aspect of the holiday, which our group did together to ensure we included everyone's perspective. We rated everything as excellent, which I am sure you will appreciate takes some doing for a tour company. In terms of planning the trip ACL, were very helpful and flexible; there was a sense of good timing and efficiency when planning and then delivering the holiday. We would highly recommend the use of Asia Central Link CO. LTD. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g294190-i9408-k6600223-o20-Recommended_Agents-Myanmar.html

Very impressed by A.C.L – Guides were almost always waiting at airport with clear signs which made the trip hassle-free. Appreciated a checkup care half way through trip. It would be a good idea to give customers a list of tours & prices. That, A.C.L can organize in each location as soon as customers are met. We used locally arranged guides as information was clearer and pricing sensible.

We so enjoyed working with ACL and were delighted with the private custom package they put together for us, well within our budget. The guides were all accommodating and very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. Hotels excellent, great locations and met our American standards. We had so many personal experiences. In Bagan we did a Rotary service project of buying food for a month to feed 74 orphaned boys. In Mandalay I had the opportunity to assist in feeding monks at a College monastery. In Mogok we were invited to have lunch at a relative’s home of our guide. We truly had the opportunity of being and enjoying the warm friendly people of Myanmar and getting to know their fascinating culture.
The office personal of ACL, offer good and prompt communication via email and spoke good English with our phone calls. I highly recommend using this company.

We had such an enjoyable time in Myanmar, the country far exceeded our expectations and I hope that we can make another trip in the near future.

What really made the trip special are the guides that you provided for us. They were all knowledgeable and showed a genuine desire to share the Myanmar culture. Transportation was first rate. Cars were well maintained and drivers safe. Accommodations were what we requested as well. We can highly recommend Viewpoint in Bagan and Bayview in Inle. Panorama was as we requested and adequate for a one night stay in Yangon.

I also want to thank you for your prompt responses to my many requests. In the end, after consulting with 4 different travel agents, I chose ACL because of your prompt and detailed responses. I knew we made the right choice when you hadn't received the wire transfer, yet were so patient and accommodating while I dealt with the situation in the US from Shanghai! I will post on Trip Advisor about my great experience with ACL.

Jezuba, I hope to be contacting you soon to plan our next trip!

LTD.
